New Job

So finally, for the first time in my life...a proper job! I beat 240 people to get an interview with 7 others hoping to be offered the job of researcher for a cool Lib Dem MP, and I got the job of assistant researcher! Gone are the days of internhood, lazing around, being stressed about the big future out there...I went to an all party group on Wellbeing Economics today and it made me release how lucky I am - I have been offered a job from 10am - 5.30pm, hours I adore, I get to work in Parliament and learn more about the mad world of politics, and I might even be making enough money to think about moving out soon...

So, finished education, 15 years at school in Sussex and Birmingham, 4 years doing Literature and Linguistics at Oxford with a year abroad in East Germany, now to the life of the graduate, three years in...

Surprisingly, I've been hit by the recession. I've had about 200 job rejections, and that's only those that bothered to reply...

I was an unpaid intern for a year and it was actually a lot of fun. I worked in three law firms, two barrister's chambers, my local MP's constituency office and another MP's office in Parliament. Those were exciting times with the election.

I spent my second graduate year in gainful employment as a Parliamentary Researcher, it was amazing getting a wage for 9 months, getting to grips with Coalition government, being an Intern Rep to enrich the other Parliamentary Intern's experience with careers talks, lunches and drinks and occasionally bumping into celebrities such as Jude Law at events in Parliament.

For the last 10 months I've been training to be an adviser at my local Citizens Advice Bureau, quite a change, but one I made as although Parliament is glamorous, it is harder to see outcomes of your work than it is on a local level, helping individual people face to face. I'm hoping to become a good adviser, so that I might get a paid job sometime soon. I'll have to be patient though. In the meantime, I'm keeping up the private tuition to make some money.

I love living in London, I still feel like a bit of a tourist, and the city never ceases to surprise me with its infinite places of beauty and exciting venues. More importantly, the quality of theatre far surpasses that of Oxford and with the National Theatre Entry Pass and The Night Less Ordinary Scheme, it can be possible to sample some of London's theatrical delights for a mere £5-10
